The move from The Four Acres to Stoney Lane came from a need to move to more spacious accommodation due to the growing popularity of the club. Several sites had been viewed until a lease was offered by a local undertaker Mr H Webb, who owned a field at the rear of the Sandwell Brewery. The lease was for seven years and an annual rent of £28 was agreed. Work began almost immediately to convert the ground into a suitable home for The Albion.

The field was returfed and ashes were laid around the playing area. A wooden grandstand affectionately known as The Noah's Ark Stand was built It was on the Brewery side which ran along Sandwell Road North which was covered in the centre for 600 spectators. The uncovered portions at each end held a further 1500 spectators. The opposite side of the ground was covered in ash and it was gradually raised back so everyone got a good view although it had no covering at all and could have been very slippy on rainy days.

The first season tickets at Stoney Lane cost Five Shillings ( 25p ) the usual admission charge being six pennys (2 1/2 p).

The first game played at Stoney Lane was against The Third Lanark Rifle Volunteers from Glasgow 5th September 1885 Albion won 4 - 1 with the first goal coming after 5 minutes from Tom Green.

Over the fifteen years spent at Stoney Lane this was probably the clubs most successful playing over 350 games there and losing only 70. They scored over 900 goals and were undefeated in 14 consecutive FA Cup matches between 1885 and 1893 that run ending with a 3 - 2 defeat by Blackburn Rovers in the First Round.

In the 1885-86 season WBA beat Aston Unity 4 - 1in the First Round which began a run to their first ever FA Cup Final appearance. The tie took place 31st October 1885 in front 0f 4,027 fans at Stoney Lane. Two goals each from Tom Green and Ezra Woodhall put the Albion safely through to Round two to face local rivals Wednesbury Old Athletic again at home. Wednesbury were seeking revenge for being beaten 4-2 by The Albion the previous season again in Round Two, only 3,578 turned out for a thrilling game which ended 3-2 with Loach scoring two and George Bell the third. Albion received a bye in the third round but on Saturday 2nd January 1886 Albion met their Arch rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers  for the first time in the FA Cup although the two sides had met in four friendly's Albion winning           3 and twice in The Birmingham Cup drawing 1 - 1 and Albion winning the replay 2- 1.       This was however the first time the two sides had met in a major competition. Bell, Green and Loach again not disappointing the Home crowd of 5,196 with a 3-1 victory. On to Round Five and another home tie facing one of the older teams of the FA Cup Old Carthusians.

OLd Carthusians first entered the FA Cup in the 1879 -1880 season the year The Strollers were formed and in fact won the cup on their second attempt in 1880 - 1881season. Beaten semi finalists in 1883, 1885, they were a high scoring team who despite getting byes in the third and fourth round had scored 8 goals in this seasons competition and were much fancied to go all the way this season. January 23rd 8,137 saw a hard fought game with again Tom Green scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory to put Albion through to the last eight. Brentwood, Blackburn Rovers, Small Heath Alliance, Redcar, South Shore Swifts, Old Westminsters, West Bromwich Albion. all waiting for the news of who they would meet in the 6th round Albion hoping to avoid  the holders and the team who ended their previous cup run Blackburn Rovers. The draw was kind another home tie against unfancied Old Westminsters. Albion made light work of this tie with a 6-0 victory A hat trick for Gem Baylis , 2 for George Bell and one for Spry Woodhall. Gem Baylis's hat trick was the first by an Albion player in the FA Cup. The semi final to be played at Aston against Small Heath Alliance who would change thier name two years later to Small Heath and then in 1905 became Birmingham City. 4,100 turned out to witness Albions 4-0 victory Loach 2 Woodhall 2 to reach the final of the competition to be played at the Kennington Oval.

The opponents were Blackburn Rovers, who were appearing in their third successive final. Four of the Blackburn's  players, Fergie Suter, Hugh McIntyre, Jimmy Brown and Jimmy Douglas were playing in their fourth final in five seasons. Fred Bunn was Albion's  first-team centre-half at the time. However, he got injured and Charlie Perry replaced him for the final Albion  dominated the match but Herbie Arthur, the Blackburn goalkeeper, made several good saves and the game ended in a 0-0 draw attendance 15,156 with gate recipts of £650.

16,144 saw the replay which took place at the Racecourse Ground, Derby. A goal by Joe Sowerbutts gave Blackburn Rovers an early lead. In the second-half James Brown collected the ball in his own area, took the ball past several WBA players, ran the length of the field and scored one of the best goals scored in a FA Cup final. Blackburn now joined the Wanderers in achieving three successive cup final victories.

This was a magnificent achievement by Albion for a team of amateurs. Seven members of the team that reached the 1886 FA Cup Final still worked at Salter's Spring Factory. This included Bob Roberts, Charlie Perry, George Woodhall, George Timmins, Ezra Horton, George Bell, and Harry Bell. All eleven players were born within a six-mile radius of West Bromwich. At the time the town had a population of 56,000 people.

Blackburn had reached the Final for a third time by virtue of a narrow 2-1 victory against Swifts in the semi-final. Their opponents this time were West Bromwich, who showed their mettle as cup fighters from the moment they set foot on the Oval pitch.

Few gave Albion a chance that day, but there was a shock in store for everyone, the Rovers included, for the match finished goalless. In fact, had it not been for some great defensive work by Suter, Turner and Arthur in Rovers' goal, Albion would certainly have won.

Rovers' excuse for a below-par display was that the team had got cold watching the Boat Race in the morning, had had to miss lunch, and left themselves barely enough time to drive to Kennington and get changed before the Final kicked-off. Rovers, in fact, very nearly won in the closing minutes when Fecitt's shot glanced a fraction the wrong side of a post.

The replay took place at the Derby County cricket ground, and for the first time the Cup was fought for and won outside London. Snow had fallen all through the morning of the match, only ceasing shortly before the kick-off, and yet a 12,000 crowd gathered to see the game.

Rovers, now with Walton in for Heyes, led at half-time with a goal by Sowerbutts, scored after twenty-six minutes as a result of a raid in which Walton and Fecitt were prominent. The same player again beat Roberts, but the Rovers players made no appeal for a goal. thinking him offside. Later it transpired that the referee would have been willing to allow the goal to stand, as Sowerbutts had been played on by an Albion defender.

Albion, with their famous rushing tactics, fought like demons, and constantly harried Arthur in the Rovers goal. At a time when Albion were striving hard for an equalizer, a memorable goal by centre-forward Jimmy Brown clinched victory for Rovers with seventeen minutes to go. An Albion attack broke down and Brown collected a pass from M'lntyre well inside his own half, and suddenly set off on a run for goal. He dribbled past man after man and at last slipped the ball between the Albion posts for a wonderful individualist goal.

For the first time, but by no means the last, the Final was fought out by two sides from the Birmingham area. Albion, after their splendid 3-1 win against the Scottish imports of Preston North End in the semi-final, were expected to win, and they certainly began the match as if they had the world at their feet.

Albion's forwards had tried so hard in the first half without the reward of a goal, that they began, perhaps understandably, to lose heart in the battle against the rugged Villa defenders. After half-time the play very definitely swung Villa's way, and they took the lead on the hour as a result of a ghastly error of judgement on the part of Albion goalkeeper Roberts. Assuming wrongly that Hodgetts was offside, Roberts made no attempt to save the winger's shot.

In the last minute. Hunter, Villa's centre-forward and captain, intercepted a back-pass, and, after colliding with Roberts, succeeded in stabbing the ball over the line while lying on the ground.

After two Final defeats in successive years, Albion won at the third attempt. Preston, their opponents, had annihilated Hyde 26-0 in an earlier round, to this day a record score in the Cup competition, and had forty-three consecutive victories to their credit and a Cup goal-tally of fifty for and only two against.

They were so supremely confident of winning the Final, so the story goes, that their captain actually asked if the team could be photographed with the trophy before the match.

For the first time a ground was closed for a football match - on a 17,000 crowd inside the Oval - and unfancied Albion gained a popular, if surprising, victory. A side of purely local Staffordshire extraction, with a weekly wage bill of £10, took on 'Proud Preston', a team of highly paid artists, and won by two goals (Bayliss and Woodhall) to one, after Dew-hurst's equalizer for Preston had been hotly disputed.

The open, long-passing game of West Bromwich, backed by their tremendous enthusiasm, swept aside Preston's artistry and achieved a victory largely inspired by their diminutive outside-right Bassett, essentially a man for the big occasion.

On 2nd March, 1888, William McGregor circulated a letter to six clubs from Lancashire (Preston North End, Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, Burnley, Bolton Wanderers and Everton) and six from the Midlands (Aston Villa, Derby County, Notts County, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers) suggesting that "ten or twelve of the most prominent clubs in England combine to arrange home and away fixtures each season." John J. Bentley of Bolton Wanderers and Tom Mitchell of Blackburn Rovers responded very positively to the suggestion. They suggested that other clubs should be invited to the meeting being held on 23rd March, 1888.

The following month the Football League was formed. The first season of the Football League began in September, 1888. Albion's professional players received 10 shillings a week, with no bonuses or expenses. Albion finished in 6th place with Billy Bassett ending up as the club's top scorer

While Jack The Ripper was roaming around London's East End the first ever football league season got under way. With only 6 minutes left to play  Joe Wilson scored the first ever league goal for Albion against Stoke City  in a   2 - 0 victory at The Victoria Ground 8th September 1888 with George Woodhall scoring the second with minutes to play in front of a crowd of 4,524. Albion can claim the proud boast that they were the first ever league leaders following the opening day but in reality no team was top due to the fact that points for wins and draws had not been decided.

There is no doubt that all the clubs involved found the League was a success. The original rules required the last four clubs to retire and apply for re-election; all were successful in 1889, so the second season started with the same twelve clubs.

The First Football League Game for Albion

STOKE 0 ALBION 2

WHEN the Football League was formed in 1888, West Bromwich Albion was one of the founder members. The Throstles' first match in the new competition was against Stoke at the Victoria Ground on 8 September 1888 and Albion went into the match brimming with confidence after friendly match victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves.

Some 4,000 spectators - a good crowd for the first day of the brand-new competition - included a fair number of Albion supporters and their hopes of an early success were soon fulfilled as West Brom ran the match from the first whistle.

They pushed Stoke back into their own half from the onset and dominated the early exchanges, causing the home goalkeeper, Rowley, some anxious moments. Yet the goal which Albion threatened to score was a long time coming considering their territorial supremacy.

Woodhall twice went close, as did the forceful Pearson, and Hendry had a shot kicked off the line by Shutt, Stoke's almighty defender.

Stoke, to their credit, hit back purposefully and Albion 'keeper, Bob Roberts, had to be on his toes to keep out fine efforts from Staton and Tunnicliffe. Thus, although Albion had most of the first half, Stoke were still very much in with a chance as the 45 minutes ended.

Indeed, as the minutes ticked away in the second-half Albion's play became sloppy and on one occasion Roberts had to be at his international best to keep out a stinging shot from Sayer.

But with only six minutes left to play, the Albion the breakthrough they had been waiting for. Rowley under intense pressure and was forced to clear his line hurriedly by throwing the ball away. Joe Wilson, as quick as lightning snapped up the ball and fired it straight: past the startled Stoke goalkeeper for Albion's first-ever:  in the Football League.

In the final minute they made absolutely certain points when George Woodhall headed a second goal from Billy Bassett's centre, and although it counted for nothing at this stage, the Throstles had the pleasure of topping table on goal-average from Preston who, of corner to win the Championship and the FA Cup that season

ROBERTS, Robert John (1879-90 & 1891-92)

Goalkeeper: 84 apps.

6'4" 13 st. 0 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich, April 1859. Died: Byker, Newcastle,

October 1929.

Career: Christ Church School, George Salter's Works, Albion (Strollers) (September 1879, professional August 1885 May 1890), Sunderland Albion, Albion (May 1891 - May 1892), Aston Villa. Retired June 1893.

Albion's first international footballer, Bob was a giant of a man, just the right size for a goalkeeper of that time. He was so well built he could deal comfortably with high crosses and with any robust forward who cared to barge into him!

He had a tremendous reach, a big safe pair of hands, he wore size 13 boots (which assisted him in kicking vast distances) and above all he had a wonderful temperament.

Bob started off his playing career as an Outfield player, occupying many different positions, before finally settling down between the uprights.

He won three England caps - his first against Scotland in 1886-7, - and also he played for the Football Alliance and in three international trials.

Bob was Albion's custodian in the 1886, 1887 and 1888 FA Cup Finals, gaining a winners' medal in the latter v. Preston, when he played exceptionally well against a red-hot forward-line.

In fact he had two spells with Albion - the second being for a single season - but during his full 12 years with the club he amassed around 400 appearances including 84 in League and Cup action. A quite magnificent player - very popular - and obviously an Albion great.

Bob is one of only two players (the other is Ezra Horton) to have featured in Albion's first FA Cup-tie and the club's first Football League game. Debut v. Wednesbury Town (home) FA Cup Rd. 1. 10-11-1883

HORTON, John Henry (1882-99)

Full-back: 152 apps.

5'1072" 11 st. 0 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich,

February 1866.

Died: January 1947, aged 80.

Career Dartmouth school (West Bromwich), Oak Villa, Burslem Port Vale (1880-1), Wednesbury Old Athletic (1881-2), Albion (November 1882, professional September 1885 - May 1899). Retired summer of 1899, and took charge of Albion's reserves for a time.

A school-teacher by profession, 'Jack' Horton was a grand full-back who could never be faulted when it came to resolute tackling and clearing his line, which he did in fine style.

A magnificent clubman - 17 years with Albion - he chalked up over 250 games for the Throstles (all competitions including friendlies). He was right-back in Albion's first-ever League match in 1888 (v. Stoke) and during his long association with the club he was never critical of the way it was run.

In 1895 he played in the FA Cup Final vs. Aston Villa after missing all the previous rounds.

During his playing days 'Jack' filled in as a half-back and as an emergency centre-forward but all his fine work was done from the two full-back positions where he excelled on many occasions, perhaps being somewhat unlucky to not gain England international honours.

Brother of Ezra, Jack was a supporter of the Albion right up until the day he died, the last game he attended at The Hawthorns being the Second Division match between Albion and Swansea on 28 December 1946.

Debut v. Wednesbury Old Athletic (home) FA Cup Rd.2. 6-12-1884.

Died: November 1900.

Career: Christ Church School, George Salter Works, Albion (June 1881, professional August 1885 - July 1891), Old Hill Wanderers. Retired 1896.

Harry was an excellent full-back, meaningful and accurate with his passing and placing of the ball; certainly one of the best of his time. He was in Albion's FA Cup Final teams of 1886, 1887 and 1888, gaining a winners' medal in the third one (v. P.N.E.).

Debut v. Junction Street School (Derby), (away) FAC Rd 1.25-10-1884. League debut v. Stoke City (away)

HORTON, Ezra

(1882-1891)

Right-half: 83 apps. One goal.

510" 11 st. 4 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich,

August 1861.

Died: West Bromwich, July 1939.

Career: Christ Church & Beeches Road schools West Bromwich, George Salter Works FC, West Bromwich FC, Albion (August 1882, professional August - June 1891). Retired, and became a referee in 1895. Guested for Aston Villa in 1884-5 season and in later years he turned out for the West Bromwich Hockey team as a centre- half and became only the second Midlander to represent England at his sport.

As a footballer 'Ezra' - nicknamed 'Ironsides' - was a very sporting player, a largely defensive right-half who was good at heading, strong with his kicking and fearsome in the tackle Hence his nickname!

He played in three successive FA Cup Finals for Albion (1886-8) being a 'winner' in the latter against P.N.E. He skippered Albion in 1884-5 and had the distinction of playing in each of Albion's first 36 FA Cup-ties. In all he appeared in some 300 plus matches for the Throstles (all competition including friendlies) during his nine years' association with the club.

Ezra's brother, John Horton, was also a member of Albion's first XI, and they played together on many occasions.

In fact, Ezra played in Albion's first- ever FA Cup tie and in the club's first- ever Football League match (v. Stoke in September 1888), one of only two players to do so.

Debut v. Wednesbury Town (home) FA Cup Rd.l. 10-11-1883.

He played his first game for Albion against St. George's (away) in September 1882.

PERRY, Charles

(1884-96)

Centre-half: 219 apps. 16 goals.

511" 11 st. 4 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich,

January 1866.

Died: West Bromwich, July 1927.

Career: Christ Church School West Bromwich, West Bromwich Strollers FC (not Albion), Albion (March 1884, professional August 1885-May 1896). Retired, became club director 1896 -

1885              And kept the "Golden Cup" public house in Cross Street, West Bromwich, until George Woodhall took over in 1905.

Charlie was a superb player and grand captain. He had a polished style, was determined in everything he did, cool under pressure, and a man who marshalled his defence magnificently from the centre-half position, which was undoubtedly his best.

Brother of Tom and Walter, he won three England caps (1890-3), had two outings for the League XI, and appeared in four international trials (1889-91). He was Albion's pivot in the1887, 1888 and 1892 FA Cup Finals, gaining winners' medals in the latter two. He missed the 1895 Final through injury which eventually forced him to retire from top-class football when he was still a reasonably fit man. Tall and strong, Charlie was Albion's first 'great' centre-half and all told he served the club in more than 200 competitive games, being a regular in the side from 1888 to 1895.

Debut v. Blackburn Rovers, FA Cup Final, at the Oval, 3-4-1886

BAYLISS, Albert Edward James Matthias

(1884-1892)

Centre-forward/Right-half:

95 apps. 36 goals.

510" 11 st. 4 lbs.

Born: Tipton, August 1863.

Died: West Bromwich, August 1933.

Career: Great Bridge and Horsley Heath schools, Great Bridge Unity, Tipton Providence, Wednesbury Old Athletic, Albion (August 1884, professional August 1885 - March 1892). Guested for Walsall Town 1884-85. Retired 1892, and became Club Director

A post he initially held whilst an active player with Albion (1891-1905). A pointed a Life Member of the club in August, 1909.

'Jem' - a nickname taken from three of his Christian names - was a grand all-round footballer, always full of running, always willing to work, and always likely to score an important or spectacular goal, with either head or foot.

He played at wing-half, inside-right and centre-forward for Albion but preferred to lead the attack - his best position. He gained one England cap (1891) and was a member of Albion's FA Cup Final sides of 1886, 1887 and 1888, scoring the first goal in the latter to set up victory - and a winners' medal -over Preston North End.

'Jem' made his Albion debut at the start of the 1884-5 campaign (against Aston Villa) and hit over 20 goals in his first year with the club. In 1885-6 he notched over 20 goals, including a hat-trick in the FA Cup-tie v. Old Westminster's; his 1886-7 goals tally was around the 40 mark, and in 1887-88 he topped the charts with 50.

Bayliss was a real 'gem' when it came to finding a way past the opposing 'keeper And for Albion his goals total was in excess of 150 (all competitions and friendlies).

A gentleman in more ways than one, he actually read his own obituary notice in a local newspaper in 1897. He had gone on holiday to Gibraltar and while he was away from his Great Bridge home, rumours gained currency that he had died. He returned and proved he was alive and kicking, and quickly had the notice framed for posterity. He lived for another 36 years!

Debut v. Derby Junction Street School (away) FA Cup, 25-10-1884 (scoring twice in 7-1 win).

BASSETT, William Isaiah

(1886-1899)

Outside/inside-right: 311 apps.

77 goals.

5'6" 10 st. 7 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich,

January 1869.

Died: West Bromwich, April 1937.

Career: Christ Church School, Oak Villa, West Bromwich Strollers (not Albion), Old Church Club, Albion (August 1886 - April 1899). Retired, and became Club Director (March 1905), taking over as Chairman in September 1908, serving in that capacity until his death in 1937 at the age of 68. Member of the Football League Management Committee (1930-37), and FA Council Member (1930-37), and a Member of the International Selection Committee (England 1936-7). He was also a J.P. (appointed in 1935).

Billy Bassett is one of the great names in Albion's history. A quite brilliant footballer, fast and clever, determined and dedicated, he played mostly as an orthodox outside-right, hugging the touch- line and putting in many darting runs. His centres were immaculate and his shooting red-hot.

He was a wonderful clubman who gained 16 international caps for England (eight v Scotland in successive seasons) as well as performing regularly and consistently, for the Football League representative side and the FA XI. To date, he is the youngest Albion international player, being 19 years and 2 months when he was first capped in 1888 v Ireland.

Billy appeared in three FA Cup Finals with Albion - 1888, 1892 and 1895

Collecting a winners' medal in the first two.

He played in well over 450 games for Albion (including friendlies) and scored more than 125 goals.

He was associated with the club for 51 years and his untimely death arrived only hours before Albion were due to play Preston North End in the Semi- Final of the FA Cup at Highbury. Debut v. Wednesbury Old Athletic (home) FA Cup, 15-10-1887.

WOODHALL, George

(1883-92)

Inside-right/Outside-right:

74 apps. 20 goals.

5'9" 10 st. 8 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich,

September 1863.

Died: West Bromwich,

September 1924.

Career: Hateley Heath school, West Bromwich All Saints, Churchfield Foresters, Albion (May 1883, professional August 1885 - July 1892), Wolverhampton Wanderers (1892-4), Berwick Rangers (Birmingham League, 1894), Oldbury Town (1894-7). Retired 1898.

'Spry' Woodhall was singularly well- nicknamed, for he was indeed a sprightly player, figuring prominently at outside-right for Albion in the early days. He could centre with great accuracy and combined well in team work especially with Billy Bassett as his partner.

A regular member of Albion's forward- line for nine seasons, he won two England caps (1888) the same year he gained an FA Cup winners' medal, scoring the clinching goal in Albion's

First win over Preston in the Final. 'Spry' also played in the 1886 and 1887 Finals, and averaged a goal every three and a half games for Albion. With his delightful personality, 'Spry' was one of the most popular players of the 'Old Brigade' remembered as a generous and wholehearted sportsman by the older generation who lived to tell the tales of his brilliant play down Albion's right flank.

Debut v. Junction Street School (Derby) (away) FA Cup Rd. 1. 25-10-1884.

HENDRY, William Henry

(1888-9)

Centre-forward: 18 apps. 4 goals.

5'911 st. 0 lbs.

Born: Dundee, Scotland, June 1864. Died: Circa 1900.

Career: Dundee & Invergowrie schools, Dunblane Thistle, Dundee Wanderers (1886), Albion (August 1888 - March 1889), Stoke (1889-90), Preston North End (1890-1), Sheffield United (1891-5), Bury (1896-7), Brighton United (1898). Retired circa 1900, ill-health.

Billy was a centre-forward who had qualities of speed, headwork and wholehearted endeavour. He was never really at home with Albion but after leaving the Black Country he did extremely well with Sheffield United who converted him into a solid centre-half. He skippered the Blades for a time and helped them win promotion to Division One in 1893, making 20 appearances (2 goals).

Debut v. Stoke (away) Div. 1. 8-9-1888

WILSON, Joseph James

(1887-90)

Outside-left: 53 apps. 20 goals.

5'9" 10 st. 12 lbs.

Born: Handsworth, Birmingham, and January 1861.

Died: Acocks Green, Birmingham, October 1952, aged 91.

Career: St. Mary's school, Handsworth Grammar School, Hamstead Swifts, Aston Unity (1881-5), Stoke (1885), Walsall Town (1885-6), Aston Villa (1886), Walsall Town, Albion (September 1887 - May 1890), Kidderminster Harriers, Birmingham St. George's (1891-2). Retired, became a Football League referee and linesman (1894-1910). Was a goldsmith by profession?

Albion's first-ever Football League goal was scored by Joe Wilson against Stoke, away, on 8 September 1888. Six months earlier the same Joe Wilson had helped Albion win the FA Cup (2-1 over P.N.E.) scoring half-a-dozen goals in the earlier rounds.

A smart, unobtrusive left-winger, of dashing style and all-out aggression,

Joe kept defences on the alert with his cunning wing play. He formed a fine partnership and understanding with Tom Pearson and was virtually an ever-present in Albion's first two League campaigns.

After his playing days had ended, Joe took up refereeing, and he did a fine job for 16 years, officiating in most Division, in FA Cup-ties and at non- League level.

Debut v. Wednesday Old Athletic (home) FA Cup Rd. 1. 15-10-1887, scoring twice in Albion's 7-1 win.

PEARSON, Thomas

(1886-94)

Inside-left: 171 apps. 88 goals.

5 9" 10 st. 12 lbs.

Born: West Bromwich, May 1866. Died: West Bromwich, July 1918.

Career: Christ Church School, Oak Villa, West Bromwich Sandwell Albion (April 1886 - May 1894). Retired through injury, aged 28.

Tom was Albion's first really great marksman who was leading scorer in each of the first five Football League season, 1888-93.

He was indeed a brilliant inside-left, who had endurance, resolution, high quality shooting power - with both feet - and a distinctive short gait. He was certainly a natural goal-getter, whose alertness and presence of mind brought him well over 100 goals during his Albion career, all matches.

He played in the 1887, 1888 and 1892 FA Cup Finals, picking up winners' medals in the latter two. And in his six seasons with Albion as a League player, he missed just 14 matches (all through injury).

He would surely have earned international honours for England had not his playing days been prematurely curtailed owing to a serious leg injury, suffered in 1894. Tom, in fact, was a cripple at the age of 30, being confined to a wheel-chair.

Debut v. Nott's County (away) FA Cup Rd.6, 19-2-1887.

The 1892 FA Cup final was to be the last staged at Kennington Oval a crowd of 32, 810 watched Albion beat arch rival Aston Villa 3-0. The result was telegraphed back to West Bromwich which was recieved with shock as Villa had been firm favourites having beaten Albion 5 years earlier in 1887. They also boasted Janes Cowan a dominating centre half and Charlie Athersmith a right winger who was only 19 but already an established England international. Albion had talent of their own in Billy Bassett who had starred in the 1888 win over Preston North End.

From the kick off Albion put the pressure on Villa and within four minutes 21 year old Jasper Geddes put the underdogs in front. Sammy Nicholls added the second and third comming from"Baldy" Reynolds . Warner the Villa goalkeeper bore much of the blame for his sides defeat, particulary among the Villa supporters who smashed the windows of his business, a public house.
